What is the issue?

About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. have invasive breast cancer; according to breastcancer.org, it is predicted that in 2020, there will be 276,480 cases of invasive breast cancer. About 2.5% of women have ovarian cancer, which is also the most deadly kind of gynegcologic cancers. Cancer treatment of any kind of usually very expensive, and tends to take a major toll on a person's finances and career. Women who deal with cancer also often struggle with body image issues, as the disease and its treatment can dramatically alter one's health and body.

Financial Impact


According to breastcancer.org, even 12 years after being diagnosed, women who were treated for breast cancer had to spend between $1,000 to $3,000 annually. In other words, there is oftentimes a longterm financial toll on women's lifestyles. It is not uncommon for many women to dip into their retirement savings in order to make ends meet with such debts.

Body Image

In a world where the media has a specific image that is characterized as "beautiful" for women, it can be difficult for women to adjust to the changes their bodies undergo. According to a survery done by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, 77% of women of women 50 and younger were unhappy with their body image. As the physical change which women go through can be difficult in an unexplicable way, it is important that people support any family members and friends who have cancer. Remind them that they are, and always will be, beautiful!

Any amount is beneficial, and it is vital that we do all we can to support these strong women! It is also important that women have regular mammmograms and visit their OB-GYN.
